Artificial Intelligence (AI) is everywhere right now, but a lot of the terms around it can sound more complicated than they really are.

Here are five AI terms you’ll keep hearing, explained in simple language.

1. Large Language Model (LLM)

A Large Language Model (LLM) is the technology behind tools like ChatGPT and Claude.

It is trained on huge amounts of text so it can recognise patterns in language and generate human-like responses.

That is why an LLM can answer questions, write content and hold conversations.

The system has been exposed to a massive amount of text and learned how language usually works, but it does not understand information exactly the way a human does.

2. Hallucination

In AI, a hallucination happens when the system gives information that is false or made up, but presents it confidently as if it were true.

This can happen because AI generates responses based on patterns and likely wording rather than actually “knowing” whether every statement is correct.

That is why important facts from AI should still be checked.

3. Prompt

A prompt is simply the instruction, question or request you give to an AI tool.

For example:

“Summarise this article in five points.”

or

“Create a monthly budget for a RM3,000 salary.”

The clearer and more specific your prompt is, the more useful the AI’s response will usually be.

That is also where the term prompt engineering comes from, writing better instructions to get better results from AI.

4. Machine Learning (ML)

Machine Learning (ML) is a field of technology that allows computer systems to learn patterns from data.

Instead of programmers creating a fixed rule for every possible situation, machine learning systems use data to improve predictions or decisions.

For example, a video app may learn what type of content you like based on what you usually watch.

5. Automation

Automation means using technology to carry out tasks automatically without needing constant human input.

Not all automation uses AI.

However, AI has made automation more powerful by allowing systems to handle more complex tasks, such as sorting customer enquiries, reading documents or identifying errors in data.
